Our final Breaking Lines of 2019 touches base with one of the newest coaches among the Portland Timbers and Thorns ranks, even if Miles Joseph has been with the club for well over one year, now. But from being a part of the inaugural MLS College Draft, to a member of the original New York/New Jersey MetroStars, to a staff member on one of MLS' iconic teams to somebody that helped the Timbers reach a second MLS Cup, the Portland assistant is one of the more well-traveled personalities in the league.

On this show, we start with this college days, track back to his path through his playing career, and end with his thoughts on the vocation he concedes will be with him until retirement: coaching.

A lifelong MLS fan, Zivin set his sights on becoming a play-by-play person early in life. Now, he has one of the best positions in MLS, broadcast for one of the league’s higher profile clubs.

The 1975 Portland Timbers changed the landscape of Oregon sports, establishing professional soccer as a cornerstone event in a region which, across the United States, would become a hotbed for the world’s game. On Tuesday, the team was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame, capping a legacy lives on in the Rose City’s love of soccer.

Men’s soccer is experiencing a renaissance on The Bluff, and it’s coincided with the arrival of Nick Carlin-Voigt.

Three years ago, the former UCLA assistant arrived at the University of Portland and guided the program to its first postseason appearance since 2009. Last year, the team replicated that feat while bursting out of the gate with a 13-game unbeaten run, eventually eliminating UCLA in the NCAA tournament.

Ryan Sierakowski led Michigan State in scoring each of his four seasons in East Lansing, Michigan, but after getting drafted in the first round of the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, the Illinois native had to adjust: adjust to life in a new city; to the game at a new level; and to a career that would begin with a position. Eight months later, Sierakowski has become a key piece for a Timbers 2 team hoping to return to USL’s playoffs.

One year ago, Dennie Wendt’s life in soccer drastically changed.

A child of the NASL Timbers and a graduate of the University of Portland, Wendt had been around the game from his formative years, eventually progressing into a career within the game’s marketing side and as a freelance journalist. Last year, though, Wendt took on two new ventures: assuming the editorship of Howler quarterly, and opening Possession, a store on Southwest Morrison dedicated to soccer culture.

Over the last three years, Carlos Anguiano has gone from Timbers academy hopeful, to United Soccer League debutant, to consistent contributor for Timbers 2 to now, when he’s holding down a starting spot in head coach Cameron Knowles’ midfield. Still only 19 years old, Anguiano is enjoying his first full season as a professional, having turned down an opportunity to go the college route this fall and taken to leap up from Salem to pursue his dreams full time in Portland.

Last week in Beaverton, Breaking Lines caught up with the T2 midfielder, who has become key cog in the team’s pursuit of a second-straight postseason berth.

They first played together in 2011, in the last season of Women's Professional Soccer. Since then, Thorns FC players Katherine Reynolds and Angela Salem have been teammates four more times, with their travels together taking them to Atlanta, Western New York, Newcastle (Australia) and Portland. From sharing a house with four teammates while playing the Beat, Reynolds and Salem have kept finding each other over a decade in soccer, with Salem taking part in Reynolds' wedding last fall.

The number of boxes Michelle French checks as a guest of Breaking Lines sets a record that may never be broken.

A playing legend on The Bluff, French returned to her alma mater last year to right the women’s soccer team’s course. Leveraging the experience she accrued while on staff with the U.S. women’s national team, French helped the Pilots double their previous year’s win total, starting a tenure that will add to the three College Cups and All-American status she collected under Clive Charles, as well as her three years as a player in the Women’s United Soccer Association and 14 senior caps for the United States.

So … yeah. I guess you could say there’s a lot to talk about.

On this episode, we discuss her transition back to Portland, the legacies she’s inheriting at UP, her time on the field, her years coaching under Jill Ellis as well the chances for her former team, the United States, retain their title at the coming Women’s World Cup.
